2016 ITF Beach Tennis World Champion Joana Cortez is among the 450 athletes who will compete at the Mormaii Garopaba Open de Beach Tennis 2017 in Brazil on 15-17 December.

The event will take place in Garopaba, a town of just under 20,000 people located on the coast between Curitiba and Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, and will feature both a $10,000 prize money professional tournament and an amateur tournament run by CBT, the Brazilian Tennis Federation.

As well as Cortez, the Italian Veronica Casadei will be among the big names in the women’s draw. In the men’s event, world No. 7 Alessandro Calbucci and world No. 9 Ralff Abreu – one of Brazil’s top players at the moment – will headline.

Calbucci plays with fellow Italian Andrea Stutto, while Abreu will team up with Vinicius Chapparo, also of Brazil – the pair represent perhaps the best chance of home success.

But whether or not the Brazilians give the home fans something to cheer about, with around 30 matches likely to going on at any one time the atmosphere in Garopaba is set to be superb.
