Osaka Mayor's Cup ready for quarterfinals

Third seed Liang En Shuo reached the Osaka Mayor's Cup girls' quarterfinals having posted a 76 (7) 63 win over Sina Zuger of Switzerland on Thursday.

The 17-year-old Liang will take on seventh seed Wang Xiyu of China, who posted a 60 61 win over 12th seed Denisa Hindova of the Czech Republic, in the quarterfinals.

Second seed Wang Xin Yu of China also moved into the quarterfinals with a 60 63 win over 13th seed Viktoria Dema of Ukraine on Thursday.

The 16-year-old Wang currently ranks No. 10 in the world based on her 24-8 winning record in girls’ singles this year. She’s won two Grade 1 events in Nanjing, China and Nonthaburi, Thailand this year.

Wang played all four Grand Slam junior events with her best results reaching the third round at Wimbledon and Roland Garros. In doubles with frequent partner, Liang En Shuo, she was a U.S. Open semifinalist.

Wang is set to play ninth seed Lulu Sun of Switzerland in the quarterfinals. Sun earned her quarterfinal spot with a 64 63 win over eighth seed Chen Pei Hsuan of Taipei.

Fifth seed Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia is into the Osaka Mayor’s Cup quarterfinal after defeating 11th seed Joanna Garland of Taipei 76 (1) 61.

Rakhimova started the 2017 season with two tournament victories in January, taking a Grade 2 title in Slovakia and a Grade 1 title in the Czech Republic in January.

The 16-year-old Rakhimova, currently ranked No. 31, will play Sohyun Park of Korea. The 14th seed, Park earned her quarterfinal slot with an upset win over fourth seed Yuki Naito of Japan 75 63 on Thursday.

Ninth seed Yanki Erel of Turkey reached his first Grade A quarterfinal courtesy of a 63 63 win over seventh seed Thomas Bosancic of Australia.

The 115th-ranked Erel is a left-hander whose won two junior titles this season, a Grade 2 event in Cairo, and a Grade 4 tournament in Istanbul.

The boys’ quarterfinal will propose a challenge for the Turk, who will face top seed Yuta Shimizu of Japan. Shimizu was a 62 63 winner over Japanese qualifier Taisei Kageyama 62 63.

Tristan Boyer of the USA won the unseeded battle of the day against Stefan Storch of Australia 63 64 to advance to the final eight. Boyer will now face 11th seed James Kent Trotter of Japan, who moved ahead with a 64 62 win over fifth seed Tseng Chun Hsin of Taipei.

Second seed Timofey Skatov is slated to play Australian Rinky Hijkata in the quarterfinals. Skatov continued his straight-set winning run through the draw with a 61 62 third round victory over 13th seed Ryuki Matsuda of Japan. Hijikata needed three sets to secure his quarterfinal berth with a 26 76 (2) 63 upset over 10th seed Filip Cristian Jianu of Romania.

Unseeded Erik Grevelius of Sweden, a 63 61 winner over unseeded Kai Kawano of Japan, heads into the quarters against fourth seed Naoki Tajima of Japan. Tajima claimed his quarterfinal spot with a 76 (3) 60 win over 15th seed Dane Sweeny of Australia.
