Favourites advance after opening ties

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: All but one of the seeded teams at the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals overcame the rain and their opponents to win their opening ties in Budapest.

France, fifth seeds in Junior Fed Cup, were the only seeded team to lose, falling to Argentina when Maia Haumuller and Jazmin Ortenzi defeated Yasmine Mansouri and Carole Morlet 76(2) 16 10-3 in the decisive doubles rubber.

Elsewhere in Junior Fed Cup, No. 1 seed USA and No. 2 seed Japan recorded comfortable 3-0 wins against Belarus and Morocco, respectively.

In Junior Davis Cup, all eight seeded nations won, but defending champion Russia came close to upsetting No. 2 seed Argentina, with Thiago Tirante and Alejo Lingua defeating Rail Ibragimov and Timofey Skatov 76(1) 67(5) 10-2 in the doubles rubber.

Top seed Czech Republic, No. 3 seed USA and No. 4 seed Croatia all recorded 3-0 wins - against Canada, Morocco and Belgium, respectively.

With the dry weather continuing into the evening, the second round of group stage matches was able to begin. Three Junior Fed Cup teams managed to complete their ties - No. 1 USA defeated Uruguay, No. 4 Ukraine defeated Chinese Taipei and Argentina defeated Morocco.
