Frederico Gil, 32, enjoyed a great return to his hometown of Sintra, Portugal where he brought to an end a 15-month spell without a singles title win.

This was the third straight tournament held at the Beloura Tennis Academy in Sintra although Gil only competed in the last two and having reached the final the previous week where he lost out in straight sets to fellow countryman Joao Monteiro, Gil went one better in this latest tournament and claimed his first title of 2017 without loss of a set all week.

"It was the best two weeks of the season, for me. Two finals, one title," said Gil, after his 63 62 defeat of the Spaniard Pablo Vivero Gonzalez in Sunday's final.

The Portuguese, who represented his nation in Davis Cup between 2004-2013, spoke highly of the tournament afterwards, commenting: "I liked this tournament, despite the windy location, but I’m used to it, because I’m from Sintra."

"The academy has great conditions to host more tournaments. I see Francisco Pita, the director, willing to do more and grow," Gil added.

Looking ahead, the aim is a return to the ATP Tour admits Gil but he recognises the importance of hosting tournaments at this level stating: "It’s very important to have these ITF events in Portugal."
