International 18&U GSDF Team to North America 2017

The GSDF Team to North America participated in a schedule of three tournaments from 21 August through to 10 September.

Eight players joined the team from the start - at the Prince George’s County International Hard Court Junior Tennis Championships (G1). They included boys Alan Fernando Rubio Fierros (MEX), Uisung Park (KOR), Mohamed Ali Bellalouna (TUN) and Menelaos Efstathiou (CYP) and girls Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (COL), Daniela Vismane (LAT), Naho Sato (JPN) and Sada Nahimana (BDI).

At the first event, the best results came in the boys’ doubles event. Uisung Park from Korea, Republic made it through to the quarterfinal stage with his non-ITF partner where they narrowly lost out to the eventual runners-up of the tournament.

In the girls’ singles category Daniela Vismane of Latvia had the most success where she was knocked out in the third round after a tough match against the eventual tournament winner.

At Les Internationaux de Tennis Junior Banque Nationale du Canada (G1) the team achieved further great results with Naho Sato from Japan picking up her game to reach the quarterfinals in the girls’ singles category, where she was narrowly defeated in a three-set match by eventual tournament winner Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

In the boys’ doubles Mohamed Ali Bellalouna of Tunisia partnered with teammate Menelaos Efstathiou of Cyprus to reach the quarterfinals as did Uisung Park with his non-ITF/GSDF partner, who lost to the eventual winners of the tournament.

Sada Nahimana of Burundi reached the quarterfinals in the girls’ doubles category with her non-ITF/GSDF partner, where they fell to Saho and her non-ITF/GSDF partner. Latvian Vismane, with her non-ITF/GSDF partner, lost out in the quarterfinals to the eventual runners up of the tournament. Saho’s success continued when she powered through to the finals to claim the girls’ doubles title with her non-ITF/GSDF partner.

The tour came to a close at the US Open Junior Tennis Championship, where the team's best result came in the form of Vismane who reached the quarterfinals of the girls’ doubles when she and her non-ITF partner lost out in a tough match to the eventual runners up of the tournament.

The team is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF), providing players not only with the opportunity to take part in top-level international competition but also the invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF/GSDF coach.

The two coaches on tour were Roberta Burzagli of Brazil and Ivan Molina of Colombia.
