The Chinese Fed Cup player only competed in one tournament on the ITF Pro Circuit during April but it was a big one.

Off the back of a run to the semifinal of a WTA $125,000 series tournament in Zhengzhou, China, Saisai Zheng remained in her homeland to compete in a $100,000 tournament in Anning.

A former WTA Top 60 ranked player, Zheng, seeded second, added to her last title win almost a month earlier in Quanzhou with a 75 64 win over Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, but, at one stage it appeared as though the 23-year-old wouldn’t make it into the final.

During her semifinal match with fellow Chinese player Zhaoxuan Yang, momentum looked to have swung the way of Yang when she levelled the match dropping just two games in the second set.

Zheng, however, came back strong and reversed that scoreline in the decisive set to move into her 16th singles final on the ITF Pro Circuit.

This title win in Anning, the ninth of her career for the two-time Australian Open doubles semifinalist (2013 and 2016) lifted her to 67 in the WTA rankings, her highest ranking since August 2016, and a return to the WTA Top 60 is now surely an attainable goal.
