The ITF and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have published the qualification criteria and timeline for the Wheelchair Tennis Event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The competition will feature men’s, women’s and quad singles and doubles events.
The men’s singles draw will feature a maximum of 56 players. These will include 34 direct entries based on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ranking as of 23 May 2016, and 12 Bipartite Commission Invitation places determined by the ITF and IPC. There will be up to eight additional places allocated to doubles players who will also be eligible to contest singles. The winners of the 2014 Asian Para Games and 2015 Parapan American Games are also guaranteed a place in the draw.
The women’s singles draw will feature 32 players, including 22 direct entries based on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ranking as of 23 May 2016, and eight Bipartite Commission Invitation places. The winners of the 2014 Asian Para Games and 2015 Parapan American Games will automatically qualify.
The quad singles draw will feature 16 players, including 12 direct entries based on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ranking as of 23 May 2016, and four Bipartite Commission Invitation places.
The doubles draws will include a maximum of 28 men’s teams, 16 women’s teams and eight quad teams.
The 2014 Asian Para Games will be held in Incheon, South Korea on 18-24 October 2014 and the 2015 Parapan American Games will take place in Toronto, Canada from the 8-13 August 2015. The men’s and women’s singles champions will automatically qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Tennis Event.
Each National Paralympic Committee (NPC) can enter a maximum of four men, four women and three quad players. All players are eligible to compete in both singles and doubles. The ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ranking as of 23 May 2016 will be used to determine direct entries for all events.
To be considered for a Bipartite Commission Invitation, the ITF must receive an official application in writing from the relevant NPC by 7 June 2016.
