It was far from a routine day for Mike Denayer and Nico Langmann, former and current leading junior players, on Tuesday’s first day of the 12th Trofeo della Mole, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, with Belgium’s Denayer eventually recovering from an indifferent start in Torino to win their first round men’s singles match.

Denayer, now 25 and a former world No. 3 ranked junior, beat Langmann, Austria’s 17-year-old current world No. 5 ranked junior 16 62 62 in one of the eight men’s matches on the opening day of the ITF 2 Series tournament, while Switzerland’s Thomas von Daeniken also had to come from a set down in an even tighter finish to his contest against Italian wild card Pietro Mazzei for 46 63 64 victory.

There were mixed fortunes for the host nation as Fabian Mazzei, long since the leading men’s player in Italy, overwhelmed Switzerland’s Herbert Keller 60 60. On paper, Mazzei’s second round contest against Austria’s Martin Legner could be the pick of the matches as the seeded players get their challenges underway,

Ivan Lion and Antonio Moretto both clinched tense all-Italian encounters, Lion edging out Gerardo Riccardi 64 76(4) and Moretto defeating his higher ranked countryman Ivan Tratter 76(5) 64, but despite his best effort Luca Arca slipped to a narrow 75 75 loss to former world No. 1 Ricky Molier.

After recently graduating from university in Great Britain, Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi eased through 62 62 against Switzerland’s Raphael Gremion, Another former men’s world No. 1, Laurent Giammartini of France, is set to meet the current world No. 1 ranked junior Alfie Hewett for a place in the quarterfinals after sweeping past Italy’s Antonio Cippo 61 60.

Denmark’s Malene Olesen beat Dutchwoman Evie Erkelens 75 61 ahead of meeting American third seed Emmy Kaiser in the women’s singles, while Switzerland’s Gabriela Buehler had few problems booking herself a second round meeting with eighth seed Lola Ochoa of Spain after defeating Italy’s Denise Boldi 61 61.
