The International Olympic Committee has announced Yao Ming as the latest Ambassador for next month’s second Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China.
The Chinese basketball legend will share his advice and experience of international competition with the next generation of young athletes at the games, which will feature both junior tennis No. 1’s Andrey Rublev and Ivana Jorovic.
Ming, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Games, will attend the YOG where he will join London 2012 gold medallist Chad le Clos and 2014 U.S Women’s Open champion Michelle Wie on the list of announced ambassadors.
Nanjing 2014 will showcase 28 sports featuring new formats and innovations such as mixed-team and mixed-country events. Athletes will also be encouraged to take part in a unique programme of activities and workshops with sessions on topics including injury prevention, the dangers of doping and illegal betting and media training.
The Youth Olympic Tennis Event, for players aged 18-and-under, will take place on 17-24 August at the Tennis Academy of China. Thirty-eight countries are represented in the boys' and girls' events that comprise 32 players in singles, 16 pairs in doubles and 32 pairs in mixed doubles.
