Germany’s Peter Torebko won his sixth pro singles title at the Aegon GB Pro-Series Newcastle on Saturday with a 61 64 victory over defending champion Ashley Hewitt (GBR). It was Torebko’s third title in Great Britain following his triumphs at Bath and Tipton in 2012.
In front of a crowd of over 100 people, the 26-year-old was a man on a mission. He steamrolled his way through the opening set to take an early lead 61 and was a break up in the second when rain arrived. The courts quickly disappeared under water and the final was moved indoors.
On the faster indoor court both players held serve relatively comfortably and the German, who spent much of 2013 out injured, closed out the match for a 61 64 victory.
“The final was more like an ATP event, and it was a great atmosphere to play in,” said the No. 7 seed. “I am really happy when I come to play in Britain, and have good memories of my titles here in 2012. Once we moved indoors I knew serving well was going to be the key, and thankfully I did this.”
Prior to the start of the final one minute’s silence was held in memory of British player Elena Baltacha who died the previous week.
