Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup Qualifying, Santa Cruz, Bolivia
The first Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final qualifying events of the year are taking place this week in Santa Cruz, Bolivia on 21-26 April, with the winners securing the first positions into September’s Finals.
Ten nations from the South American region are competing in each of the boys’ and girls’ under 16 South American Qualifying events, with two round-robin pools preceding play-off ties that will dictate final positions.
Three spots are up for grabs in each event for a place in the Junior Davis Cup/Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on 23-28 September.
Orlando Luz drives Brazil’s hopes in the Junior Davis Cup, with the world Junior No. 3 looking to continue the good form that saw him claim the recent Grade A title in Porto Alegre and help his nation secure a place at the prestigious Finals in Mexico.
The second-seeded nation will have to go toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Argentina, No. 3 Colombia and No. 4 Peru in an attempt to assure its progress in the competition.
The favoured teams contesting the Fed Cup qualifying event at the same venue in Santa Cruz this week include top-seeded Ecuador, No. 2 Brazil, No. 3 Peru and No. 4 Argentina, who will also battle it out amongst other South American nations for one of three places into the Finals.
Meanwhile, World Junior Tennis – the international team competition for Under 14s – is also taking place this week in the form of the boys’ Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying event in New Delhi on 21-26 April.
Korea, champion in 2011 and a runner-up in 2012, headlines the event as No. 1 seed. It is one of 16 teams from the Asia/Oceania region looking to secure one of four spots into the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic on 4-9 August.
The girls' World Junior Tennis Asia/Oceania Qualifying event takes place at the same venue on 28 April-3 May.
