The hugely successful second annual World Tennis Day, which took place on 3 March, coincided with the opening of the first beach tennis court in Iran’s non-coastal region of Maragheh.

The occasion, which further highlights the burgeoning global appeal of a sport that continues to grow year on year, introduced 300 participants and a number of children to beach tennis following the cutting of the ribbon at the opening ceremony.

While the event did not strictly use official beach tennis equipment, using tennis rackets and balls instead, it nonetheless opened the kids’ eyes to an exciting new brand of tennis.

When it comes to beach sport, many of the youngsters in attendance would have been more likely to associate the sandy surface with beach soccer prior to the showcase, since the Iranian team reached the 2013 Beach Soccer World Cup quarterfinals and won the 2013 edition of the AFC Beach Soccer Championship.

As well as the estimated 300 participants, the event was also attended by a number of city and provincial officials including Dr. Shahram Dabiri, the chairman of the tennis committee in the East Azerbaijan province, and Mr. Ebrahimi, the mayor of Maragheh. Both expressed their gratitude to those involved with the opening of the beach tennis court and underlined the potential for all forms of tennis to prosper in the region.
