Guatemala through to Final Qualifying in Canada

MATCH REPORT

Guatemala at the North Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event

The North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying for Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas took place last week in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with a total of 27 teams competing for the two places at the Final Qualifying event in Montreal, Canada.

In the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas there were 15 teams competing for the one spot at Final Qualifying, with top seeds Guatemala prevailing over third seeds Puerto Rico in the final.

Christopher Veeling (GUA) drew first blood for the top seeds, sealing victory over Puerto Rico's Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal in straight sets. Ignacio Garcia (PUR) then returned in kind to level the tie with a win over Ryan Mueller (DOM) to force the deciding doubles. Mueller and Veeling combined forces to seal victory over Garcia and Rodriguez-Vidal and secure their place in Montreal.

The Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas event saw 12 teams battling it out for one sole place at Final Qualifying, with the final taking place between top seeds Guatemala and third seeds Dominican Republic.

Sadly for the hosts it was the top seeds who came out on top, with the pair of Karla Cordero and Ana Schedelgar (GUA) proving too strong for Penelope Abreu and Ashley Almonte (DOM), sealing a 75 62 win in the deciding doubles to claim victory and a place at the Final Qualifying.

Both Guatemalan teams will join teams from Canada, Mexico and USA at the Final Qualifying event in Montreal on 8-10 May to compete for a place at the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in September.
