RANCHO SANTA FE, CA, USA: Tamira Paszek claimed a third career ITF singles title with a crushing defeat of Shuko Aoyama in the final at the weekend.
Barring a close quarterfinal and dropping her only set of the week in the semifinal, the 23-year-old Austrian had enjoyed a relatively comfortable passage through the draw in this tournament which was being held for the fourth consecutive year at this Californian venue in San Diego County.
In the final, fifth seeded Fed Cup player Paszek, a former world number 26 and two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, conceded just two games to her unseeded opponent as she added to her two ITF singles titles won in 2005 and 2010 and became the second European champion, after 2011 winner Michelle Larcher De Brito, with an impressive 61 61 win and end the two-year reign of American winners of this event.
There was, however, home based success in the doubles event where American Samantha Crawford took the doubles title with partner Yi-Fan Xu from China. The third seeds came from behind to defeat the unseeded all-American pairing of Danielle Lao and Keri Wong 36 62 [12-10].
