The quarterfinals at the 50th Coffee Bowl were decided on Wednesday in Costa Rica. In the Boys draw, the eight matches of the third round had six seeded winners, with number one seed Roman Safiullin (RUS) coasting to a 63 64 victory over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Tim Van Rijthoven (NED) produced an excellent display to be beat the higher ranked Nam Hoang Ly (VIE) in straight sets, 61 76(5). At the bottom of the draw Joao Menezes (BRA), the number two seed, overcame a tough three set battle with Rafael Coutinho of Venezuela 63 76 61. Players to watch in the remaining field include unseeded 14 year old Corentin Moutet (FRA) and Kalman Boyd (USA), both of whom have upset high seeded players on their way to the quarterfinals.
Wednesday's round of 16 Girls results concluded in five seeded players into the quarterfinals. Top seed Marie Bouzkova (CZE) continues to cruise along and now meets the feisty and dangerous Usue Arconada of USA in the quartfinals. Unseeded Olga Fridman (UKR) won a long three set match with Maria Fernanda Herazo Gonzalez (COL), 63 67(5) 62. The Ukranian will next take on the athletic Emily Arbuthnott from Great Britain. Arbuthnott was a lot more comprehensive in her round of 16 victory, defeating Simone Pratt (BAH) 61 62. Aliona Bolsova (ESP) will meet the unseeded Kelly Chen (USA) who has beaten strong seeded players to win her place in the quarterfinal draw. The remaining spots in the Girls draw go to Catherine Bellis (USA), seeded eight and unseeded, Mia Horvit also of USA. Impressively. Horvit earlier in the tournament knocked out number two seed Jaqueline Cristian of Romania to keep her run going in Costa Rica.
