The 2014 ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship will return to the National Tennis Centre in Moscow on 17-20 July. This is the third year that the championship has been staged in Moscow as part of a three-year deal with the Russian Tennis Federation.
In 2013 spectators at Russia’s National Tennis Centre were treated to four days of beach tennis of the highest calibre which culminated in a nailbiting final day. The talented Brazilian team avenged their defeat to favourites Italy in the previous year’s final to capture the title, while hosts Russia also avenged a 2012 loss to France to make it onto the podium in third place.
A total of 20 nations competed in the second edition of the event, which has already become one of the highlights on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, with a further increase in entries expected in 2014.
The Team Championship is one of the two flagship events on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour alongside the individual Beach Tennis World Championships. Since the launch of the Tour in 2008, worldwide participation has continued to grow each year, with fifty nations currently represented in the ITF Beach Tennis Rankings.
ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “We are delighted with the success of this world team championship which reflects the continuing growth and popularity of the Beach Tennis Tour. The ITF is proud of its family of international team competitions, and hope that this championship will attract even more nations to the sport.”
