The players chosen to travel as part of the International 18 & under ITF/GSDF Team to the Yucatan Cup, Eddie Herr and the Orange Bowl showed a lot of promise and recorded some excellent results. The team, who competed in two Grade 1 tournaments and one Grade A tournament in Mexico and the USA was comprised of two boys, Jurabek Karimov of Uzbekistan and Guy Orly Iradukunda of Burundi, and two girls, Theresa Van Zyl of South Africa and Namibian Lesedi Jacobs.
The girls had a good start to the tour, reaching the doubles semifinals at the XXVII Yucatan Cup. In the singles of the same event, both Guy Orly Iradukunda and Theresa Van Zyl reached the third round.
At the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships, Guy Orly Iradukunda stood out from the team by reaching the third round, beating the third seed and 7th ranked Frenchman Johan Sebastien Tatlot. He then lost to thirteenth seed American Francis Tiafoe 64 64.
In the first round of the Metropolia Orange Bowl International Championship Guy Orly Iradukunda recovered from 42 down in the third set to win 62 16 64 against Ku Keon Kang of Korea in an entertaining match which lasted almost three hours.
The ITF would like to thank all of the tennis federations involved in organising the tournaments during the tour and offering such great hospitality to the players while on tour.
The team, travelling with coach Ivan Molina (COL), is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF), which provides players with the opportunity to take part in top level international competition as well as invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF/GSDF coach.
