BALNEARIO CAMBORIU, BRAZIL: Beach tennis returns to the home of the first Brazilian tournament of 2013 as we move into November.
The resort of Balneario Camboriu, which was host to a G3 tournament back in March, will host another beach tennis tournament on 2-3 November. The titles at their March competition saw victory go to home favourites Marcus Ferreira and Thales Santos and Samantha Barijan and Joana Cortez; four players who would later in the year go on to win the inaugural ITF Beach Tennis Pan American Championships.
This latest tournament in the South American nation which is into double figures for tournaments held in 2013, however, is a G1 level tournament and will be the second of three held at this level in Brazil this year. This year's first Brazilian G1, held in September, saw the champions come from the successful Brazilian squad who had claimed a first ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship in Moscow during July.
Brazilian beach tennis has enjoyed arguably its greatest beach tennis year so far as, along with the nation’s World Team and Pan American triumphs, the latter of which was also staged in Brazil, their number one female players, Samantha Barijan and Joana Cortez, ascended to the World No. 1 spot with the rankings release of 9 September.
The two players became the first non-Italians, male or female, to hold the top world ranking in beach tennis.
A host of top players are expected to enter as part of their preparations for the popular stop on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour for players in Aruba less than two weeks later.
The final G1 to take place in Brazil will follow in mid-December hot on the heels of back-to-back G3 tournaments at the start of the month.
