Stephane Houdet, Sabine Ellerbrock and Boaz Kramer are the Sardinia Open men’s, women’s and quad singles champions for 2013 after the event voted Tournament of the Year on the 2012 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour came to an end for the 14th time on Saturday in Alghero, Italy.

There were victories for the world No. 2 ranked players in both the men’s and women’s singles, with Houdet winning his second Sardinia Open title since 2007 after the Frenchman secured his eighth career victory over Japan’s world No. 1 Shingo Kunieda.

Second seed Houdet won the points that mattered for a 75 75 victory over Kunieda and the world’s top two ranked players have now beaten each other three times apiece this season. Houdet has now won four singles titles in 2013.

Another victory for France was also guaranteed in the men’s doubles, but this time Houdet found himself on the wrong end of the scoreline. Second seeds Joachim Gerard of Belgium and Michael Jeremiasz brought their first tournament together as doubles partners to a victorious end after edging top seeds Houdet and Austria’s Martin Legner 62 36 [11-9].

Ellerbrock secures hat trick of titles

Ellerbrock claimed the women’s singles title in Alghero for the third successive year, while also winning the women’s doubles title for the second year in a row.

The German top seed won her second ITF 1 Series singles title of the season and the seventh of her career after a 63 64 win over second seed Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain.

Whiley was again on the opposite side of the net in the women’s doubles final, as was Dutchwoman Sharon Walraven, the player Ellerbrock partnered to win the doubles title in Sardinia in 2012.

Ellerbrcok partnered Italy’s Marianna Lauro to victory this year as the second seeds claimed their second successive doubles title, having only played their first of three tournaments together to date in June. Ellerbrock and Lauro beat top seeds Walraven and Whiley 64 76(4).

Kramer completes quad singles and doubles title haul

Like Ellerbrock, Israel’s Boaz Kramer also completed the Sardinia Open with singles and doubles titles after defeating Italy’s Marco Innocenti in the quad singles final.

Kramer won the second ITF 1 Series singles title of his career and his first since the 2008 Pensacola Open after ending Italian hopes of a title double on the final day when he beat Innocenti 64 76(3).

Kramer had already partnered Shraga Weinberg to an all-Israeli win in the quad doubles after the Beijing 2008 silver medallists beat top seeds Antony Cotterill of Great Britain and Marcus Jonsson of Sweden 61 62 in Friday’s final.
