The Brazilian ladies managed to see off the threat from their Venezuelan and Chilean opponents in their opening matches at the inaugural ITF Beach Tennis Pan American Championships.
Lorena Melo and Flavia Muniz, the second ranked Brazilian team, faced a tough opponent in the Venezuelan team of Patricia Diaz and Andrea Pereira. A close first set saw the Venezuelans fall at the last hurdle as Brazil managed to close out the set 64.
The pressure was by no means relieved in the second set as Diaz’s athleticism kept them in the game and caused the Brazilians all sorts of problems. The experienced Brazilian team however, prevented the Venezuelans from improving on their first set score closing out the match 64 64.
The second match saw Chile face the third ranked Brazilian team with much the same result. Unable to get a proper grip on the match, the Chilean ladies saw the first set slip away 62 before conceding the second set and the match 62 61.
Due to poor light conditions, no further matches were played and the men’s teams looked to Wednesday to start their campaign for Pan American dominance.
