Seventh seed David Phillipson reached the men’s singles semifinals at the Trofeo della Mole, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, after registering a victory of Austria’s Martin Legner for the second successive week on Thursday in Turin.
Phillipson had led Legner 3-0 in the first set of their quarterfinal at last week’s Wroclaw Cup when Legner was forced after the frame on his tennis chair broke. Legner went on to have his chair welded to allow himself to complete the Polish tournament and the third seed made a much better start to his quarterfinal against Phillipson in Turin. However, Phillipson recovered from dropping the opening set to advance 36 62 62, setting up a semifinal against Belgian top seed Joachim Gerard.
Gerard ended Australian Adam Kellerman’s hopes of back-to-back ITF 2 Series titles, but not before fifth seed Kellerman, who is currently at his career best ranking of No. 17 following his Wroclaw Cup victory, took the world No. 4 to three sets for the first time their career meetings. Gerard eventually claimed the deciding set for a 60 46 63 victory, ending any prospect of a rematch of Kellerman’s Wroclaw Cup final against Phillipson.
Both quarterfinals in the bottom half of the men’s draw went according to the seeding as second seed Frederic Cattaneo defeated his fellow Frenchman David Dalmasso 62 63. Cattaneo will now play the second British semifinalist, Marc McCarroll, after McCarroll edged ahead in his career head-to-head record against Poland’s Tadeusz Kruszelnicki. Fourth seed McCarroll held on for a 63 63 win over sixth seed Kruszelnicki and has now won three of their five career meetings.
Women’s doubles finalists decided
While it was a rest day in the women’s singles ahead of Friday’s semifinal, the women’s doubles finalists were decided after both semifinals were won by the same score.
French top seeds Emilie Chene and Pauline Helouin defeated Italian duo Stefania Galletti and Monica Quassinti 64 62 in their semifinal. While the second seeds went out in the other semifinal, the result arguably went to form as Korea Republic’s Ju-Yeon Park and Belgium’s Annick Sevenans defeated Korean Myung-Hee Hwang and Kanako Domori of Japan 64 62.
One of the four seeded partnerships in the men’s doubles also exited on the third day of play in Turin as Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi partnered Kellerman to beat Belgian third seeds Mike Denayer and Gerard in thrilling circumstances. Caverzaschi and Kellerman eventually wrapped up a 63 36 (16-14) victory over a deciding championship tiebreak and will now go on to play top seeds Cattaneo and Legner for a place in the final.
As the top three seeded pairings all progressed after comfortable straight sets wins, there will be three British players in the other semifinal, with second seeds Alfie Hewett and McCarroll set to take on third seeds Kruszelnicki and Phillipson.
