Top seed Gustavo Fernandez will play second seed Joachim Gerard in Sunday’s men’s singles final at the 5th Open Memorial Santi Silvas, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, after the two players paired up on Saturday to win the men’s doubles.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Aniek van Koot has completed her tournament in OIot by also claiming the women’s singles and doubles titles.

World No. 5 Fernandez ended Stefan Olsson’s unbeaten record in Olot after narrowly getting the better of the four-time champion and third seed in their semifinal to beat the Swede 64 16 64.

Gerard secured a much more comfortable victory in his semifinal when overcoming Dutch fourth seed Tom Egberink 61 62.

Gerard will now bid to beat Fernandez for the first time since their first career meeting on the NEC Tour in 2011.

Fernandez and Gerard claimed a narrow win in the men’s doubles final as the second seeds clinched the important points for a 75 64 win over top seeds Egberink and Olsson.

With two wins from her first two round-robin matches, van Koot was handed her second women’s singles title in Olot since 2009 after being awarded a walkover and a recorded 60 60 win in her scheduled final match against Frenchwoman Pauline Helouin.

Van Koot also partnered Helouin to win the women’s doubles as the top seeds edged out Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana and Spain’s Lola Ochoa 75 64 after Ochoa had beaten Carbillana 63 64 to take runners-up honours in the singles.

With ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ambassador Tommy Robredo and his Foundation providing a number of activities and entertainment for the players and visitors throughout the week, the latest feature on the penultimate day of the ITF 2 series tournament saw Robredo play an exhibition with Sebastián Nerone. Nerone is one of Argentina’s leading players in padel, a racket sport popular in Spain and Hispanic American countries.

Before Sunday’s men’s singles final between Fernandez and Gerard, Robredo will also play an exhibition with Alex Corretja, Spain’s Davis Cup captain and member of Spain’s Davis Cup-winning team in 2000.
