The women’s singles finalists were decided on the Friday’s second day of the Open International Fundacion Emilio Sanchez Vicario as Rody de Bie upset third seed Albin Batycki to reach the men’s singles semifinals at this week’s ITF 3 Series event on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour in Madrid.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Louise Hunt and Lola Ochoa of Spain claimed the first title of week in the women’s doubles.

Hunt won one of the matches of the day to reach Saturday’s women’s singles final, prevailing in three sets as she edged out her doubles partner and fourth seed Ochoa 64 67(5) 75 after a three hour marathon.

Hunt will face Italian top seed Marianna Lauro in the final after Lauro defeated Pauline Helouin of France.

Later in the day Hunt and Ochoa proved too strong for their French opponents in the women’s doubles final, the top seeds beating second seeds Evelyn Claverie and Pauline Helouin 63 62.

De Bie and Perez join top seeds in men’s semis

For the second day in succession a seeded player exited the men’s singles as de Bie upset Poland’s Batycki of 63 62. The young Dutchman will play his doubles partner and second seed Alfie Hewett for a place in the final after Hewett, the world No. 1 ranked junior, secured his second career win over Sebastien Husser of France 63 64.

In the top half of the men’s singles draw Ruben Perez was the player to take the Spanish challenge forward after beating his younger compatriot Martin de la Puente 62 63. After beating fourth seed Leonid Shevchik on the opening day of play, Perez will now come up against French top seed Lahcen Majdi. Majdi advanced to the last four with a comfortable 61 61 win over Spain’s Martin Varela.

A busy day for Hewett and de Bie saw them also win two doubles matches to book their place in the final.

After their first round bye the second seeds eased through their quarterfinal against Dutch duo Florian de Boer and Ruben de Sain 60 61. However, their semifinal proved to be much more of a challenge and Hewett and de Bie had to come from a set down before eventually edging out experienced Spanish fourth seeds Alvaro Illobre and Varela 46 61 (10-7) after a match tiebreak.

De Bie and Hewett will play either top seeds Husser and Majdi or third seeds Batycki and Shevchik in the final, with the second semifinal scheduled for Saturday’s penultimate day of play.
