Weinberg to meet Norfolk in Israel Open semi

Two former world No. 1s will go head-to-head in Wednesday’s quad singles semifinals at the Israel Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, after top seed Shraga Weinberg and fourth seed Peter Norfolk both recorded 60 60 wins on the second day of the of the ITF 2 Series tournament in Tel Aviv.

On a day when the women’s singles semifinalists and men’s singles quarterfinalists were also decided, Weinberg beat fellow Israeli Itai Erenlib 60 60 and Britain’s Norfolk eased past Italy’s Alfredo di Cosmo to set up a rematch of their London 2012 quarterfinal, when Weinberg ended Norfolk’s bid for a third successive Paralympic quad singles gold medal.

Three of the four quarterfinals ended 60 60, after second seed Boaz Kramer also beat Shir Teraza in another all-Israeli contest. However, British third seed Adam Field exited the tournament after a 64 63 loss to Patric Ben Uriel, who now faces Kramer for a place in the final.

Mashkovsky into women’s singles semis

Field was not the only seeded player to bow out of the tournament on Tuesday, as Inna Mashkovsky also added to the home success after beating women’s singles third seed Busra Un of Turkey.

Mashkovsky secured a 62 64 victory to set up a semifinal against top seed Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain, who opened her challenge with a 60 60 win over Russia’s Polina Shakirova.

Second seed Bianca Osterer of Germany and third seed Christine Schoenn of France will meet in the other semifinal after winning their quarterfinals 61 61 against Turkish opponents, with Oster beating Julide Yildiz and Schoenn defeating Ebru Bulgurcu.

Golovin recovers to reach men’s singles quarterfinals

Russian seventh seed Yuriy Golovin edged into the men’s singles quarterfinals after recovering from a slow start against his Italian opponent Diego Amadori. Golovin eventually secured a 36 61 60 victory to earn his place in the last eight against second seed David Phillipson of Great Britain.

Phillipson joined Polish fifth seed Kamil Fabisiak in posting a 60 60 win after a first round bye, with Phillipson beating Shahar Levi and Fabisiak dominating his match against Haim Lev. Fabisiak faces fourth seed Laszlo Farkas of Hungary in the quarterfinals after Farkas defeated Israel’s Genadi Kohanov 61 64.

There was mixed success for Israeli players in the top quarter of the draw, with British top seed Marc McCarroll recording a comfortable 60 61 win over Meir Cohen. However, eighth seed Asaaf Stokol ensured that Israel will have a representative in the men’s quarterfinals after beating Italy’s Marco Amadori 63 60.
