The second day of on-court action in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinals was dominated by two doubles rubbers that both ended 1513 in the fifth set.

In Boise, Idaho, a thrilling doubles match saw Serbia take a 2-1 lead over USA. Serbian pair Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac claimed consecutive tiebreaks to take a two set lead over Bob and Mike Bryan. The Bryan brothers battled back only for Zimonjic/Bozoljac to claim an epic fifth set to seal a 76(5) 76(1) 57 46 1513 victory in four hours and 23 minutes.

Over the border in Vancouver and the scoreline was being mirrored but this time it was the hosts who were to take the spoils. Canada's pairing of Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil looked to have given the home team a 2-1 lead when they went two-sets-to-love up against Daniele Bracciali and Fabio Fognini but the Italians fought back to force a fifth set.

After a gruelling encounter the Canadian duo finally clinched the third point of the tie taking the final set 1513.

In the first two ties of the day Argentina claimed an unlikely doubles victory over France to take a 2-1 lead in the tie at Parque Roca, Buenos Aires.

Despite early French dominance, Argentine pair David Nalbandian and Horacio Zeballos turned the match around, taking all but three of the last 14 games to beat Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 36 76(3) 75 63.

If Argentina can claim one of Sunday’s two reverse singles rubbers it will be a first victory in six attempts against France. The winners will contest a semifinal with the victors of a finely poised tie between champions Czech Republic and Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev and Yuriy Schukin beat Czech Republic’s Jan Hajek and Radek Stepanek to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The Czech pair looked good as they went a break up and served for the first set. But the Kazakhs hit back and prevailed 76(2) 64 63 in two hours and 21 minutes.
