Gustavo Fernandez and David Wagner won their second singles titles in successive weeks as Aniek van Koot claimed the women’s singles title at the Cajun Classic, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, on Sunday in Baton Rouge to bring two weeks of back-to-back ITF 1 Series tournaments in USA to an end.

World No. 1 Van Koot ended her second straight tournament in USA on a high after edging out fellow Dutch second seed Marjolein Buis 75 64.

A week after Buis had made the most of van Koot’s first round exit at the Pensacola Open to claim the spoils in Florida, the world No. 5 put up a determined effort in her bid for back-to-back titles, but a back-on-form van Koot just had the edge to retain her Cajun Classic title and repeat her win over Buis in the semifinals of last year’s event.

Fernandez clinched his first win over world No. 10 Nicolas Peifer in the five matches the two former world No. 1 juniors have played in senior competition as he followed up his Pensacola Open win with victory in Baton Rouge. Although Peifer had won their previous two Cajun Classic encounters in 2011 and 2012, Argentinean third seed and world No. 4 Fernandez came through his toughest match of the week to wrap up a 62 36 64 victory over his French opponent in the men’s singles final.

By comparison, Wagner’s victory in the all-American quad singles final could not have been much more comprehensive as the world No. 1 earned a 60 61 win over his doubles partner, second seed Nick Taylor, to maintain his unbeaten record against Taylor that dates back to the end of 2006.

Top seeds win doubles titles

Despite having beaten world No. 2 Stephane Houdet in the semifinals and Peifer in the final of the men’s singles, Fernandez was on the end of a French victory in the men’s doubles.

Fernandez and Dutchman Ronald Vink had dropped just three games en route to the final, but top seeds Houdet and Frederic Cattaneo had moved into the title decider without dropping a single game and went on to seal the title 64 62.

Meanwhile, with Taylor and Wagner having won the quad doubles on Saturday’s penultimate day of play, Buis and van Koot paired up to complete a hat-trick of wins for the top seeds in the Cajun Classic doubles events as they eased past South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane and Katharina Kruger of Germany 60 63.
