The two teams from Guatemala went into this week's 2013 North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event in the Dominican Republic as favourites and now both have secured their spot in the next stage of the competition.
The Guatemalan boys' team overcame Aruba 2-1 while the girls' defeated hosts Dominican Republic by the same scoreline on Saturday to put them in the North/Central America & Caribbean final qualifying event, which takes place in Montreal on 2-4 May.
Christopher Vleeming gave Guatemala the perfect start in the boys' final with a 62 61 victory over Kyle Frankel before Aruba's Patrick Sydow defeated Kevin Hernandez 61 64 to level the tie. The Guatemala duo of Hernandez and Vleeming proved too strong in the doubles, defeating Frankel and Sydow 62 63 to seal victory.
In the girls' final, Domincan Republic's Laura Quezada defeated Laura Lopez 76(5) 63 to give the hosts the perfect start but Guatemala won the next two points courtesy of a singles victory for Karla Cordero over Penelope Abreu and then a decisive doubles win.
The ultimate goal for all the teams involved this week was to earn a spot in the World Junior Tennis Finals, which take place in Prostejov, Czech Republic, in August.
