BIRMINGHAM, AL, USA: First round action from the Highland Park Tennis Center saw the teenage American duo of Mitchell Krueger and Bjorn Fratangelo cause an upset as they dished out a convincing 62 63 straight sets defeat to the number two seeds.
The American second seeds Daniel Nguyen and Ryan Thacher were the only seeded casualties in the doubles event's opening round on a day which also saw the second seed eliminated from the singles event as Germany's Peter Heller went out in three sets to Mathias Bourgue from France.
Elsewhere in the singles event, two Brits made it safely into the second round with Liam Broady and Kyle Edmund both winning in straight sets. Joining the British pair and Bourgue in the second round was the seventh seeded American Sekou Bangoura who came from behind to earn a 36 62 64 victory over fellow American and wild card entrant Noah Rubin.
With only the four singles matches played, the action from the first round will continue today (Wednesday) and among those taking to the court will be the shock doubles winners with Krueger facing a qualifier and Fratangelo, the 2011 Junior Roland Garros champion and seeded sixth, once more facing Thacher across the net.
