Barcelona 1992 Paralympic women’s singles silver medallist Lynn Seidemann was among those to progress to matches against the seeded players during Thursday’s first day of the PTR Championships, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA.
Seidemman returned to the NEC Tour earlier this season after a break of 15 years during which time she has achieved success in equestrian sport, but she booked her place in the women’s singles quarterfinals after beating fellow American Denise Esrey 63 61.
All four women’s matches played on the opening day of the ITF 2 Series event were contested by American players, with Kate Stuteville, Jessica Sporte and Jan Proctor all advancing in straight sets.
All four women’s seeds come from outside the USA, with Proctor now set to take on British top seed and former two time champion and 2011 runner-up on Hilton Head Lucy Shuker, while Seidemann will face German second seeds Katharina Kruger. Stuteville will take on third seed Francisca Mardones of Chile and Sporte will play fourth seed Annabelle Ribeaud of Switzerland.
The most clear cut win of the day came in the quad singles as Canada’s Gary Luker beat USA’s Eric Daniels without dropping a game. Luker will play American top seed Bryan Barten in the last eight.
David Jordan, Francois Trawalter and David Buck also all secured straight sets wins to progress to matches against second seed Antony Cotterill, his fellow Brit and third seed Adam Field and fourth seed Greg Hasterok of USA respectively.
Three American players and three French players will feature in the men’s singles quarterfinals after French duo Yoann Quilliou and Thomas Vinatier secured straight sets wins. Quilliou eased past Canada’s Eric Gilbert 61 63 to book his place in the last eight against top seed and defending champion Gordon Reid of Great Britain, with Vinatier dropping just one game to USA’s Russell Rodriguez to earn a meeting with American second seed Stephen Welch.
The other French quarterfinalist, third seed Frederic Cazeaudumec, will play American John Becker, who came through one of the closest matches on the opening day to beat Brazil’s Pedro Rocha 64 63, while Canada’s Philippe Bedard and American fourth seed Steve Baldwin will contest the remaining quarterfinal.
