Majdi and Helouin survive as seeds progress

All eight seeds reached the men’s singles quarterfinals on the second day of play at the Open de L’Ile re Re, a part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, while all four seeds reached the women’s singles and quad singles semifinals.

However, it was not all straight forward for Lahcen Majdi in the men’s singles and Pauline Helouin in the women’s singles as both French players had to come through tense three set matches before progressing.

Sixth seed Majdi battled to a 61 26 63 victory over fellow Frenchman Sebastien Husser, setting up a quarterfinal against Austrian third seed Martin Legner, who secured a 75 62 win over young Dutchman Rody de Bie.

Elsewhere, French players Nicolas Peifer, Thomas Vinatier and Yoann Quilliou and Belgian second seed Joachim Gerard all came through their second round matches for the loss of just one game apiece, with defending champion and top seed Peifer moving on to a match against eighth seed David Dalmasso, while Gerard will meet Quilliou. Fourth seed Ben Weekes of Australia will play Vinatier after Weekes eased past Frenchman Philippe Bonnet 62 61.

Helouin holds on to reach women’s semifinals

Third seed Pauline Helouin survived a tough challenge from Dutchwoman Mieke van Chastelet before booking her place in the women’s singles semifinals.

Helouin edged out van Chastelet 75 26 64 and will now play top seed Annick Sevenans in the last four after top seed Sevenans maintained her title defence with a 61 62 victory over her fellow fellow Belgian Els Verhoeven.

The all-French line-up in the bottom half of the women’s draw resulted in second seed Christine Schoenn and fourth seed Charlotte Famin securing straight sets wins over Elelyne Claverie and Emmanuelle Morch  respectively, with  Schoenn beating Claverie 61 63 and Famin beating Morch 61 64.

Seeds ease into quad singles semis. Doubles final line-up decided

There were straight sets wins for top seed Antony Cotterill and second seed Antonio Raffaele as tey completed the semifinal line-up for the quad singles.

With third seed Stephane Erismann and fourth seed Thomas Huguenin having already booked their places in the semifinals, top seed Cotterill set up a match against Huguenin after he beat his fellow Brit Chris Johnson 60 75.

Meanwhile, Raffaele will play Erismann for a place in the final after the Italian beat Erismann 63 61.

The first main draw final line-up of the week to be decided is in quad doubles.

Top seeds Cotterill and Raffaele beat Huguenin and Johnson 61 61 and will take on French second seeds Erismann and Sebastien Jance in the final after the Erismann and Jance’s 62 61 victory over their fellow countrymen David Alves Cerqueira and Patrick Sappino.
