UMAG, CROATIA:  Another day of fierce competition in the Super-Seniors World Individual Championships saw a number of high seeds fall. After yesterday’s rain, no wind and beautiful sunshine meant near perfect conditions which in turn meant for some excellent tennis.

The biggest name to fall was in Jorge Camina Borda in the men’s 65 singles. The Spaniard has looked a class apart in this age category, both in last week’s team championships and in the early rounds of the individual event. In his quarter final against Hans Adama van Scheltema (NED) today he raced into a 60 20 lead before pulling a muscle. Camina Borda battled on bravely but was forced to retire at 43 down in the second and hand victory to his opponent. Mark Cox (GBR), Peter Adrigan (GER) and Petr Kolacek (SUI) complete the semi-final line up.

In the women’s 65’s singles second seed Petro Kruger was another to fall today, losing 64 64 to eleventh seeded American Brenda Carter in the quarter finals. France won last week’s team competition in this age category, the Kitty Godfree Cup, and their dominance is clear to see with the three other semi-finalists all coming from France. Carter will face Sylvie Galfard Kirsten in one semi whilst top seed Gail Benedetti will face Michelle Bichon in the other.

The semi-finals in the Women’s 75 singles are an all North American affair with three Americans and one Canadian completing the line-up. Top seed Dori DeVries faces Canadian Inge Weber in the top half, whilst eighth seed Lynn Tietz meeting unseeded Kathy Langer in the other semi-final. DeVries lost only two games in her victory today and looks set to successfully defend her title in this age category.

The older Men’s age categories provided plenty of drama today none more so in the Men’s 80 singles where the top two seeds fell at the quarter final stage. Top seed Henri Crutchet from France lost a tight three set match against seventh seed George McCabe (USA) 36 63 46 and second seed John Powless (USA) retired at 2-0 down to Australian Adrian Alle. It was the semi-finals of the Men’s 85 singles today and unseeded Jose Castellano del Campo from Chile, in his first ever world championship, defeated third seed Francisco Guiillen from Spain to reach the final. There he will face Australian Doug Corbett who defeated top seed and defending champion Angelo Sala in the other semi-final.
