UMAG AND NOVIGRAD, CROATIA: Eight out of then cups included in the 2012 Super-Seniors World Team Championships were decided today. It was another successful day for the USA who defended six of the seven cups they won at last year’s championships in Antalya, Turkey.

Larry Turville from the USA led his team to victory in the Men’s 60 Von Cramm Cup with a 2-1 victory over France today. The French won the opening rubber before Turville took charge and won the second singles before teaming with Tony Dawson to win the deciding doubles and win the seal the trophy for the USA for the third successive year.

There was another repeat of last year’s result in the Women’s 65 Kitty Godfree Cup with France retaining their title. The first rubber of their final with the USA was a closely fought three setter with Sylvie Galfard-Kirsten (FRA) defeating Carol Clay (USA) 76(2) 57 64. That result proved crucial as the France captain Gail Benedetti, who has not dropped a set all week, swept past Brenda Carter 60 64 to give France the title.

The Women’s 70 Althea Gibson Cup team for the USA have been in commanding form all week and went into today’s final having not lost a single rubber. It was the same story today with captain Donna Fales leading the side to a 3-0 victory over fourth seeds Australia. Lorne Main is the most successful player in the 54-year history of the Seniors circuit and was hoping to lead his Canada side to victory in the Men’s 80 Gardnar Mulloy Cup. It was not to be for the 81 year old Canadian as the Canada side lost a close final to neighbours USA. Main won his singles rubber but Geroge McCabe and John Powless won the deciding doubles to give the USA victory.

The finals of the remaining thwo cups, Men’s 70 Jack Crawford Cup and Women’s 75 Queens’ Cup will be completed tomorrow. Many team players are staying on in Umag next week for Individual Championships which begin tomorrow.
