UMAG AND NOVIGRAD, CROATIA: The sun made a welcome return today as the final line ups were decided in Umag and Novigrad.
The USA will face France in the final of the Men’s 60 Von Cramm Cup tomorrow after both teams battled through tough semi-finals today. The draw had gone according to plan with the top four seeds facing off. Lawrence Turville and Tony Dawson (USA) beat Alfred Boeckl and Gerd Dahmen (GER) in the deciding doubles. The French team sealed their victory over Australia with victories in the two singles rubbers after the Australian number one Andrew Rae forced to retire through injury after one set.
The USA will also contest the final of the Women’s 70 Althea Gibson Cup facing fourth seeds Australia in tomorrow’s final. The Aussies upset second seeds Germany today with Helen Muir and Margaret Wayte (AUS) beating Nanda Fischer and Heide Orth (GER) in straight sets in the deciding doubles to seal their passage to the final.
The final of the Men’s 80 Gardnar Mulloy Cup will be an all North American encounter after the USA and Canada both won their semi -finals today. The USA defeated France after John Powless defeated Henri Crutchet in three close sets to seal victory. Canada’s Lorne Main received the first ever award for Outstanding Services to Seniors Tennis at the ITF Champions dinner during the French Open In Paris and now is in Umag hoping to add another world title to his collection. Main defeated Australian John O’Brien to help Canada defeat Australia 2-1 and move into tomorrow’s final.
