Day 8: Vergeer and Buis win all-Dutch doubles final

MATCH REPORT

LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN: No. 1 seeds Esther Vergeer and Marjolein Buis won the Paralympic women’s doubles gold medal on Saturday evening by coming through an all-Dutch final 61 63 against No. 2 seeds Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot.

This was Vergeer’s eighth career medal, seven of which have been gold, making her the most successful Paralympic tennis player of all-time, while it was a first medal of any colour for debutant Buis.

Vergeer and Buis got off to a flying start by breaking van Koot’s opening serve, and they consolidated the lead when Vergeer staved off a break point in the next game to put the No. 1 seeds 2-0 up.

Griffioen held serve to reduce the arrears to 2-1, but the one-way traffic continued as Vergeer and Buis reeled off four straight games to wrap up the first set in 39 minutes.

The momentum swung at the start of the second set with Griffioen and van Koot racing into a 2-0 lead, but they couldn’t maintain that level and the No. 1 seeds responded with five successive games to take the match away from their opponents.

Griffioen and van Koot briefly rallied to get back to 5-3, only for Buis to seal the gold medal by holding serve for victory in 1 hour 19 minutes. The No. 2 seeds frequently adopted the tactics of avoiding world No. 1 Vergeer by hitting to Buis, but the lower ranked player was up to the challenge.

It was the first medal for Buis and post match she said "I am so excited and so happy. It's my first medal and its wonderful to win." Partner Vergeer added "I did not expect a final like this  - we expected a way more difficult final in three sets maybe and a hard fight. But actually we played amazing. And as we got closer to the victory we thought 'is this really going to happen' and we looked at each other and we could not believe it."
