Victoria Azarenka was the only woman to make it through to the US Open semifinal on Tuesday as rain descended on Flushing Meadows, causing the other matches to be stopped.

Azarenka, the world No. 1, won a close-fought battle with reigning champion Samantha Stosur 61 46 76(5). This win means that Azarenka progresses to the US Open semifinal for the first time. It seemed as though everything was going her way after a comfortable first set but then Stosur showed a glimpse of the form which won her the title last year, seemingly hitting winners at will.

Stosur fought back from two breaks down in the final set to force a tiebreak and found herself 5-0 down in that, but she fought back, forcing it to 5-5 before Azarenka clinched the match with a forehand which hit the line.

The Belarusian will play either Maria Sharapova or Marion Bartoli in the semifinal. That match was suspended with Bartoli 4-0 up in the first set. Sharapova’s fourth round match was also halted for a rain delay with the Russian behind but when they restarted play, she won six of the last eight games to progress.

In the men’s draw, David Ferrer beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets 75 76(2) 64 to progress to the quarterfinals. Ferrer, the fourth seed, has only dropped one set in the tournament so far and looks to be in excellent form. He will play either Janko Tipsarevic or Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinal. That match was stopped because of the rain with Tipsarevic leading 5-2 in the first set.

In the other two matches which were suspended, Novak Djokovic is 2-0 up in the first set against Stanislas Wawrinka and the match between Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick is in a first set tiebreak. Roddick is 1-0 up in the tiebreak.

There were only two other matches completed in the tournament on Tuesday, both of which were doubles matches. In the men’s doubles, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, who have both been selected in Spain’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team to face USA in the semifinals, beat Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 63 64 to move into the semifinals.

In the women’s doubles, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, the second seeds, beat Julia Goerges and Kveta Peschke 62 76(2) to reach the semifinals. Errani and Vinci will play each other in the singles quarterfinal on Wednesday and whoever wins will become the first Italian woman to reach the semifinal since 1930.
