Daniela di Toro of Australia came from a set down to reach the women's singles semifinals on the third day of the Salzburg Tappe Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as South Africa’s Lucas Sithole and Giuseppe Polidori of Italy reached the quad singles final and all four seeds progressed to the men’s singles semifinals.

The women’s singles semifinals will be without Dutch second seed Marjolein Buis, who withdrew from her scheduled singles quarterfinal and doubles semifinal to protect a shoulder injury as she eyes next month’s Paralympic Tennis Event in London.

Buis’s withdrawal gave American Emmy Kaiser a walkover into the last four, where she will face di Toro after the Australian fourth seed held off a fine effort from Korea’s Ju-Yeon Park to prevail 36 62 64.

In the top half of the women’s draw there were no scares for top seed Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany and third seed Annick Sevenans of Belgium. World No. 7 Sevenans, a two-time champion in Salzburg, produced the day’s most dominant performance when she eased past Russia’s Polina Shackirova 60 60, while world No. 4 Ellerbrock moved to within one match of reaching her second successive final in Salzburg when she defeated Britain’s Lucy Shuker 61 62.

Polidori upsets rankings to reach quad final

Former world No. 4 Polidori reached his first NEC Tour quad singles final of 2012 after beating second seed Adam Field of Great Britain. Polidori edged out Field in three close sets in South Africa in May, but dropped just three games in their semifinal in Salzburg to win 63 60.

The other semifinal went to form as South African top seed and world No. 8 Lucas Sithole beat Antonio Raffaele 62 60 to make it a mixed day for Italy.

Peifer edges out Weekes to reach men’s semis

Second seed Nicolas Peifer struggled in his men’s singles quarterfinal against Australian sixth seed Ben Weekes, but held on to reach the last four 63 75 despite Weekes having had chances to take the contest to a deciding set.

Peifer will now play third seed Robin Ammerlaan of the Netherlands for a place in the final after Ammerlaan powered to a 61 61 over Sweden’s Peter Vikstrom.

Both quarterfinals in the top half of the draw also produced comfortable wins for top seed Ronald Vink and fourth seed Joachim Gerard. World No. 4 Vink ended the hopes of the home nation when he defeated fifth seed Martin Legner 61 61. Gerard will play Vink in the semifinals after he beat Italy’s Fabian Mazzei 61 62.

All three doubles final line-ups were also decided as top seeds Ammerlaan and Vink won through to face second seeds Gerard and Peifer.

Meanwhile, with Buis withdrawing from the tournament with injury, Australian duo di Toro and Janel Manns had a walkover into the women’s doubles final, in which they will face German second seeds Ellerbrock and Katharina Kruger.

All four singles semifinalists will meet again in the quad doubles final after top seeds Polidori and Raffaele won through to play Field and Sithole for the title.
