WOMEN’S WORLD GROUP
Japan reached to the women’s final for the third time since 2001 after securing a 3-0 win over 2011 runners-up Germany in their semifinal, with both of Japan’s singles players beating higher ranked opponents.
World No. 17 Kanako Domori sealed the opening singles rubber against world No. 12 Katharina Kruger 63 64, but there was an even closer match to come in the second singles rubber as world No. 7 Yui Kamiji edged past world No. 5 Sabine Ellerbrock in a final set tie-break to secure a famous victory 63 67(3) 76(3).
With the semi already lost for Germany, Japan were awarded a walkover in the dead doubles rubber.
Germany will play Great Britain in the bronze medal play-off after the fourth seeds were beaten 3-0 by the Netherlands, who moved to within one contest of a possible 25th women’s title at the World Team Cup in 27 years.
World No. 4 Jiske Griffioen beat Jordanne Whiley 60 62 in the first singles rubber, while world No. 2 Aniek van Koot beat Lucy Shuker 61 63 to put the result of the tie beyond any doubt and secure the Netherlands place in Friday’s final.
Griffioen and world No. 3 Marjolein Buis completed a 3-0 win for the Dutch after beating Shuker and Whiley 60 62 in the doubles.
With the Johan Cruyff Foundation once again supporting the junior event at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup, it was Shelby Baron, the girl’s singles runner-up at January’s Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in France, who got sixth seeds USA off to a solid start in their semifinal against Great Britain after beating Lauren Jones 61 60
Alfie Hewett, the boys’ single champion at the Junior Masters, levelled the contest after beating Chris Herman 64 62, but Herman and Baron fought back to beat Hewett and Jones 36 62 (10-7) after a match tiebreak in a thrilling conclusion to the deciding doubles rubber and wrapped up a 2-1 win for USA.
In the other semifinal between the Netherlands and South Africa, Jeroen Staman beat Mabel Mankgele 61 60 to launch the Dutch en route to a 3-0 victory after Carlos Anker defeated Gift Lenkhanyane 62 62 and Diede de Groot partnered Anker to beat Lenkhanyane and Mankgele 61 64 in the doubles rubber
The Netherlands will now contest the World Team Cup junior final for the tenth time and have won the title on six previous occasions to date. USA will play in the junior final for the third time, having won the inaugural event in 2000.
