The first of two new tournaments on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour supported by the Emilio Sanchez Vicario Foundation takes place this week in Barcelona.

The Open International Fundacion Emilio Sanchez Vicario Barcelona starts on Thursday at the Academia Sanchez Casa and features players from across Europe and South America.

The second tournament, the Open International Fundacion Emilio Sanchez Vicario Madrid, will be held at the Ciudad de la Raqueta in Madrid.

Both tournaments carry ITF 3 status this year on the NEC Tour and each have prize money purses of 10,000 Euros.

Sanchez, captain of Spain’s winning Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team in 2008, is the second former Davis Cup player for Spain whose foundation is organising 2012 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour events.

Current ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ambassador Tommy Robredo and his foundation organise the ITF 2 Series Open Memorial Santi Silvas in Olot, Spain. A tournament which is now in its fourth year and was founded in memory of Spanish wheelchair tennis players Santi Silvas, who had been a close friend of Robredo’s since childhood before he passed away in 2008. This year’s Open Memorial Santi Silvas takes place in June.
