Canada and Mexico reach men's play-off

Top seeds Canada and Mexico will contest Friday's men's final play-off at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Pre-qualification Event for the Americas in Mexico City after progressing through their respecitive semifinals with ease on Thursday.

Philippe Bedard gave top seeds Canada a comfortable lead in their semifinal against Puerto Rico after beating Miguel Lozada 62 60 in the first singles rubber, while Joel Dembe ensured the victory for Canada after defeating Hector Maldonado 61 62.  With Lozada carrying a shoulder injury, the doubles rubber was not played.

Host nation Mexico also got off to a solid start in their semifinal after Margarito Bautista defeated El Salvador's Mario Lucero 62 62.. Rolando Avila Valdes gave Mexico and unassailable 2-0 lead when he beat Cristobal Rivera 62 61, while Bautista and Joaquin Isaac Palma Pineiro wrapped up a 3-0 victory after recording a 62 63 win over Pedro Perez and Rivera in the doubles.

As the second of the four regional qualifying events for the 2012 BNP Paribas World Team Cup concludes on Friday, as well as Canada and Mexico meeting for a place in Men's World Group 2, Colombia and Chile also go head-to-head for a place in the Women's World Group.

The women's play-off will be a highly intriguing contest after Colombia edged Chile in a final set tie-break in the deciding doubles rubber when the two nations met in the round-robin phase of the competition on the first day of play this week in Mexico City.
