Mexico recorded a 2-1 victory over host Puerto Rico on Wednesday as the remaining two places in the men's play-off semifinals were decided at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Pre-qualifying Event for the Americas in Mexico City.

On a mixed day for the host nation, Chile also beat Mexico win the women's event to set up another intriguing contest in the play-off for a place in the women's World Group at May's BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Korea.

Margarito Bautista secured his second singles victory of the week for second seeds Mexico in round-robin Group 1 of the men's event, defeating Puerto Rico's Miguel Lozado 75 62.

Hector Maldonado kept Puerto Rico's hopes of topping Group 1 alive after winning the second singles rubber against Rolando Avila Valdes 63 64, but Bautista and Avila Valdes dominated the decisive doubles rubber to overcome Lozado and Maldonado 60 62.

As a result of finishing top of Group 1 in the round-robin phase of the competition, Mexico will face El Salvador in Thursday's semifinals, while Puerto Rico will go up against top seeds Canada.

Mexico's women's team were unable to replicate the success of the men's team as Chile secured a 3-0 victory in the last of the women's round-robin ties.

Francisca Mardones clinched the opening singles rubber after a 60 63 win over Esperanza Belmont, while Maria Antonieta Ortiz dropped the same number of games in her 63 60 win over Claudia Taboada to give Chile an unassailable lead. Mardones and Ortiz wrapped up the victory with a 60 62 victory over Rosalba Vasquez and Taboada in the doubles rubber.

With Chile's first round-robin tie in Mexico City ending with them only losing out to Colombia in a final set tie-break in the decisive doubles rubber on Monday, Friday's final play-off will be a much anticipated contest.
