The Grade A Abierto Juvenil Mexicano is beginning to take shape after another busy day of clay-court action in Mexico City.
Tuesday saw several notable upsets, including local hope Ivar Jose Aramburu Contreras of Mexico’s 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over 12th seed Tendai Tapfuma (ZIM) and Jordi Arconda (ARG)’s 6-4 6-4 defeat of Great Britain’s Jordan Angus. Matteo Donati of Italy also sent a few shockwaves through the tournament when he knocked out seventh seed Daniel Santos (PER), courtesy of a hard-fought 6-7(6) 6-3 6-3 win.
Top seed Nikola Milojevic (SRB) returns to action on Wednesday when he takes on Adrian Obert (GER), while second seed Yoshitio Nishioka (JPN) is also in action in his second round match against Fred Simonssen (SWE). Third seed Frederico Ferreira Silva (POR) will take on Luca Corintel (USA).
In boys’ doubles on Tuesday, Jorge Andres Forseck Plauchu (MEX) and Luis Pilatuna (MEX secured a 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 match tie-break win over sixth seeds Max De Vroom (NED) and Moos Sporken (NED) .
Lucas Gomez (MEX) and Ricky Medinilla (MEX) notched up a 6-1, 6 -3 win over Juan Ignacio Galarza (ARG) and Tom Hill (GBR) . José Aramburu Contreras (MEX) and Santiago Muñoz Quiroga (MEX), won 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 over fifth seeds Bar Tzuf Botzer (ISR) and Igor Smilansky (ISR).
In the girls’ competition, top seed Ganna Poznikhirenko (UKR) set up a second round meeting with Paraguay’s Camila Gianigreco Campiz on Tuesday. Second seed (and ITF GSDF Touring Team member) Zarah Razafmahatratra (MAD) will also resume her campaign for the title when she plays local hope Alejandra Cisneros (MEX).
The girls’ doubles competition saw Alejandra Cisneros (MEX)  and Rebecca Peterson (SWE) score a 6-4, 6-1 win over the USA pairing of Blair Shankle and Denise Starr to move into the second round.
Mexico’s Valeria Salazar (MEX) and her American partner Katrine Steffensen Isabel (USA) earned a 6-1 6-3 win at the expense of local duo Karen Alvarez (MEX) and Maria Regina Mancera Espíndola.
This is a the inaugural year of the Abierto Juvenil Mexicano at this venue after a change of circumstances, which has also seen the playing surface switch to clay.
