Nicolas Lapentti at a Press Conference
Nicolas Lapentti at a Press Conference
· Look at the person who is asking the question and keep looking at them when you answer. Smile and be friendly.

· If you are doing a one-on-one interview (so it’s just you and a journalist), they want to hear all about you, your tennis and how you feel, so don’t be shy. Think of some funny or interesting stories to tell about yourself or your tennis. For example, an embarrassing moment on court, or some of your superstitions.

· Sometimes, in press conferences, you may get questions which you don’t feel comfortable answering. If that happens, don’t worry. Try and steer the conversation around to things you DO want to talk about. However, if you are asked a question that you really do not feel comfortable with, you have the right to refuse to answer it.

· Listen to questions carefully and think about them before you answer. If you don’t understand the question, just say so, but try and be patient with journalists who are not speaking in their own language.

· Try not to be late for interviews and press conferences. Journalists writing for newspapers often have very little time to hear what you have to say and write their stories, so be considerate as otherwise what you say in your press conference might be too late to get into the paper at all.
