| Rain washes out junior quarterfinals at US Open |
Unfortunately, the meteorological predictions for a day of drenching rain and heavy winds in New York City came to pass, which prevented the junior quarterfinals from taking place at the US Open on Friday.
The postponed matches will take place on indoor courts on Saturday. There is rain forecasted for at least early in the day on Saturday in New York.
Prior to the matches being called for the day, junior players were hanging out in the player’s lounge alongside the likes of Venus Williams, who was catching a late lunch and waiting for sister Serena to play her semifinal match, and Rafael Nadal, playing an energetic game of Fusbol with his friends.
When the quarterfinals finally get underway there is high expectation for some intense match encounters.
Four of the remaining players have already captured a Grand Slam singles titles in their junior career.
In the girls’ draw, there are two former Wimbledon champions – Laura Robson in 2008 and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in 2009.
In the boys’ draw, there are two former Australian Open champions – Bernard Tomic in 2008 and Yuki Bhambri in 2009.
The eleventh seed Heather Watson will take on second seed Lertcheewakarn and the unseeded Robson is scheduled to go up against American Lauren Davis.
Ninth seed Daria Gavrilova of Russia will take on fourteenth seed Jana Cepelova of Slovakia in another quarterfinal, and sixteenth seed Beatrice Capra of the United States will play Yana Buchina of Russia.
In the boys’ competition, the top seed Bhambri will play unseeded American Chase Buchanan.
The third seed Tomic of Australia faces unseeded Tiago Fernandes of Brazil, and eighth seed Gianni Mina of France goes up against sixteenth seeded American Denis Kudla.
In an unseeded pairing, American Raymond Sarmiento will vie for a semifinal spot against Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.
