USA & Spain win World Junior Tennis Finals
The final day of play at TK Prostejov saw Spain lift the boys' trophy after defeating Portugal, while USA beat Czech Republic to win the girls.

The final between Spain and Portugal was decided already after the singles rubbers. Carlos Benito defeated Rodolfo Pereira (POR) in straight sets in the opening match on Centre Court to give Spain the early lead. In the second singles Frederico Silva (POR) took to the court against Albert Alcaraz (ESP). Alcaraz claimed the first set in the tie-break, before Silva fought back to claim the second 75. Silva was unable to get ahead in the third set with Alcaraz securing an early break. A brief rally from Silva restored parity at 2-2, but Alcaraz broke again to clinch the set and the title for Spain. This is Spain’s first victory since Rafael Nadal helped them to claim the title in 2000.

The tie for the much-prized 3rd place was battled out between Japan and Czech Republic. Marek Routa (CZE) made light work of Takashi Saito (JPN) winning in straight sets. Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) impressed in the second singles with a 76(3) 64 win over Robin Stanek. The deciding doubles was won in straight sets by Japan, who took 3rd place on the podium.

In the boys’ play-off ties, Uzbekistan quickly disposed of South Africa in the battle for 15th place, while Russia finished thirteenth, courtesy of their victory over Argentina.

The USA girls’ team found themselves playing in front of the largest crowd of the tournament on Court 1 as they faced the host nation, Czech Republic. The first tie saw Victoria Duval (USA) take on Aneta Dvorakova (CZE). The first set went to a tie-break, where Dvorakova held her nerve to take the lead. With an early break, Duval then fought back to claim the second set and level the match. The third set went the way of Dvorakova, who secured a break to run out a 64 win in the third.

In the girls’ second tie, Sachia Vickery (USA) met Petra Rohanova (CZE). Vickery took the first set, with Rohanova coming back in the second set to win in the tie-break. Despite fervent support from the home crowd, Rohanova struggled in the third set with Vickery running away with the set to level the tie and force the deciding doubles.

The doubles drew even more of a crowd to Court 1. The American duo of Duval and Vickery took the first set 62, however Dvorakova and Rohanova replied in kind taking the second set in the tie-break. A nervy start to the third set from the Czechs saw the USA race to a 5-0 lead. The Czechs battled on to claim one game but eventually succumbed to give the USA a 61 win in the third set and claim the title for a third successive time.

The Japanese girls won the placement tie for the bronze medals by defeating the team from Russia. Viktoriya Kan (RUS) gave Russia the lead, beating Japan’s Mami Adachi In straight sets.
