| World Junior Tennis Finals Day 5 |
Final placings for the mid-table positions were decided today, as eight teams played their last events in this year's competition.
BOYS:
5th-6th Play-off: AUS-FRA 2-0
7th-8th Play-off: TPE-ISR 1-1
9th-10th Play-off: CHI-PER 1-2
11th-12th Play-off: MEX-USA 1-2
In the boys’ event, France claimed 5th position with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Australia. Chinese Taipei won the deciding doubles match over Israel to finish 7th. Peru overcame neighbours Chile in the decisive doubles to claim 9th position. The final boys’ match was between Mexico and the USA, which the Americans won 2-1 after victory in the doubles.
GIRLS
5th-6th Play-off: FRA-BUL 1-2
7th-8th Play-off: UKR-CHN 2-1
9th-10th Play-off: NED-AUS 2-1
11th-12th Play-off: BRA-ARG 1-2
The battle for 5th place in the girls’ was between Bulgaria and France. This was a closely fought contest, with Bulgaria finally coming through in the third set of the doubles for the win. Ukraine finished 7th after beating China in another deciding doubles, while ehe Dutch girls’ team claimed 9th place, beating Australia in the two singles. 11th place came down to a deciding doubles between Brazil and Argentina, with Argentina finally coming out on top to push Brazil into 12th position.
Tomorrow sees the final matches at the top and bottom of the scale. Spain will face Portugal in the boys’ final while the girls from Czech Republic will take on defending champions USA.
