| Semi-final line-ups decided in Prostejov |
On an exciting day of tennis on the red clay courts in Prostejov with over nine hours of play, the semi-final line-ups were decided. In the boys’ competition, Spain will face Japan and Portugal will face host nation Czech Republic. In the girls’ top seed Russia find themselves against Czech Republic and Japan will play against defending champions USA.
BOYS
Group A: UZB-CHI 1-2 FRA-ESP 1-2
The tie of the day in the boys’ competition was between top seed France and Spain. All three matches provided powerful tennis at a high level. Carlos Benito (ESP) took Spain into the lead when defeating Julien Delaplane (FRA). Enzo Py then levelled the tie against Albert Alcaraz (ESP). All four singles players then went on the court for the all deciding doubles match. France took the first set and was up 54 in the second set, serving for the match, but could not win the game. The Spanish pair then got the 2nd set in the tie-break under their belt. In the decisive set, Spain stormed away to a 52 lead, but the French fought back to 54 only then to lose the match 64 in the third set. Spain will play in the semifinals, whilst France will play off for 5th to 8th position. In the other match of the group Chile defeated Uzbekistan and finishes third.
Group B: ARG-ISR 1-2 JPN-MEX 3-0
Japan was the first nation to seal their spot in the semi-finals today when they defeated Mexico in the last group match, to be the only unbeaten team in the group. Takashi Saito easily won the opening rubber over Rogelio Siller (MEX), but Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) had to come back from 25 down in the first set against Lucas Gomez (MEX), before winning the set 75 and taken control of the match in the second set. The Japanese stayed focused and also won the doubles and will now face Spain in the semi-finals. In the 2nd tie of the group Israel concluded the round robin stage with a victory over the Argentineans to finish third of the group.
Group C: POR-TPE 2-1 USA-RSA 3-0
Going into the final round robin day when they were facing each other, both Portugal and Chinese Taipei were unbeaten in Group C. In the opening singles on Centre Court Wei-Jen Chen (TPE) defeated Rodolfo Pereira (POR) in three sets. Frederico Silva had the better nerves against Chih-Chun Tang (TPE) when the second rubber went to the final stages of the third set. Silva won it 86 to keep the Portuguese chances alive. The Portuguese pair of Goncalo Loureiro and Silva played more offensively and sealed victory against Chi-Shan Jao and Tan in straight sets thus reaching the semi-finals. In only their 2nd participation in the World Junior Tennis Finals Portugal now is already sure to finish with the best ever position. In the other tie of the group, USA defeated South Africa to finish third of the group.
Group D: PER-CZE 1-2 AUS-RUS 2-1
The Czech boys qualified for the semi-finals against Portugal when they defeated Peru in the decisive tie of the group. Marek Routa and Robin Stanek, who played for the first time in singles this week, sealed victory already after the singles. The Czech will now play Portugal, the runners-up of the European Summer Cup in tomorrow’s semi-final. Australia defeated Russia in the other tie and finishes 2nd of the group.
GIRLS
Group A: RSA-AUS 1-2 RUS-FRA 2-0
Russia was the first team to secure their place in the semi-finals. Both Viktoriya Kan and Yulia Putintseva stormed their way to straight set victories in the two singles against Lou Brouleau and Leolia Jeanjean of France. France will now go into the play-off for 5th-8th place. The second tie of the group was between South Africa and Australia. Australia won the first singles in straight sets, before Madrie Le Roux (RSA) battled on in three sets to secure a much-needed win in the second singles. The doubles was also decided in three sets, with Australia finally coming out on top to secure third place in the group.
Group B: CHN-CZE 0-3 BRA-CAN 2-1
Czech Republic delighted the home crowd with a win over third seeds China. The home nation eased their way to a 3-0 win, with Aneta Dvorakova and Petra Rohanova easing their way to straight set victories in the singles. Czech Republic is now through to the semi-finals, along with the boys’ team, and they will now face top seeds Russia in the first semi-final. Canada will be constrained to play in the relegation playoff group between 13th and 16th place, as the Canadians lost their third tie in a row to Brazil. The Brazilians came through in the decisive doubles to secure third place in the group.
Group C: UKR-NED 2-1 JPN-CHI 3-0
The first tie of the group saw the most toughly contested match of the day as the Netherlands took on Ukraine in a bid to secure their place in the semi-finals. In the first singles of the tie Elke Tiel (NED) and Anna Shkudun (UKR) battled for over 4 hours with an impressive level of play. Shkudun won the first set 64, but Tiel fought back to win the second 62. Shkudun lead by a break in the final set, however Tiel dug deep to break back and finally win the match 11 9 in the third. The second tie saw Indy De Vroome (NED) take on Ukraine’s Yuliya Lysa. Lysa took the first set in the tie-break before running away with the second set to level the tie and force the deciding doubles. Ukraine took the first set to keep their semi-final hopes alive, however Netherlands then fought back to force a deciding third set. The Ukraine was awarded an early break in the third, giving them an unassailable 4-1 lead over the Dutch, who were unable to break back and had to concede victory at 63 in the third. The Netherlands now find themselves in third place in the group, whilst the Ukraine take second and Japan first, and with it a place in the semi-finals. Japan are the second country, along with the Czech Republic, to have both the girls’ and boy’s team through to the semi-finals.
Group D: USA-ARG 3-0 BUL-KOR 2-1
USA kept their hopes alive of reclaiming the title today as they brushed aside opponents Argentina for a place in the semi-finals. Victoria Duval and Sachia Vickery (USA) each won their singles, with Vickery dropping just one game. Brooke Austin then paired up with Vickery to take on Agustina Serio and Constanza Vega (ARG). Serio and Vega took the first set 64, before the Americans found form and eased their way through the next two sets 62 63. They will now face Japan in the semi-finals. Bulgaria beat Korea in the second tie of the group, securing victory after the two singles rubbers, with U14 European Champion Viktoriya Tomova (BUL) easing her way to victory in the second singles
