| Host nation Czech Republic upsets second seeds |
The girls' event saw a sweep of victories for seven of the eight seeded teams. The boys' event, hoever, was a different story, with three of the seeded teams suffering defeats in their first ties of the competition.
BOYS
Group A: UZB-FRA: 1-2 CHI-ESP: 1-2
Top seeds France got off to a shaky start this morning against a strong Uzbek team. Mokhamed Akhmed Djamal (UZB) enjoyed a straight set victory over France’s Antoine Hoang, leaving France’s top seed Enzo Py to force the decider. The Number 1 seeds quickly found form and dominated from the outset to win the doubles in straight sets. Seventh seeds Spain eased through their first day’s matches with a 3-0 victory over Chile, with Carlos Benito and Albert Alcaraz winning their singles matches.
Group B: MEX-ARG: 2-1 ISR-JPN: 0-3
One of the upsets of the day saw fourth seeds Argentina suffer a close defeat to Mexico. The tie went right down to the wire when Mexico’s top seed, Lucas Gomez, secured a win in the second singles over Argentina’s Juan Pablo Paz to take the tie to a decisive doubles, where Mexico came out on top to secure a straight-set win over the fourth seeds. Meanwhile, sixth seeds Japan scored a whitewash over their opponent, Israel, winning all three matches in straight sets.
Group C: TPE-USA: 2-1 RSA-POR: 1-2
Fifth seeds Portugal were taken to a third rubber by South Africa, however went on to secure their victory with a convincing straight-sets win in the doubles. The group's other tie saw a major upset in the first day of play. Third seeds USA suffered a defeat today to unseeded opponents Chinese Taipei. The reigning champions got off to a winning start and looked on course for victory after securing the first singles and going one set up in the second singles. However, Chinese Taipei clawed their way back into the tie taking the second singles. Chinese Taipei continued to battle hard against Number 3 seeds to take the doubles in three sets and provide one of the upsets of the day.
Group D: CZE-AUS: 2-1 RUS-PER: 1-2
Host nation, Czech Republic, caused the biggest upset of the day, beating Number 2 seeds, Australia, in a closely fought contest that once again came down to a decisive doubles. The Number 2 seeds were overwhelmed by the battling spirit of the host nation pair, Daniel Filo and Marek Routa, who went on to take the doubles 64 in the third set. Eighth seeds Peru were also taken to a decisive rubber, however dominated from the outset to run out a 63 60 win over Russia.
GIRLS
Group A: RSA-RUS: 0-3 AUS-FRA: 0-2
Top seed Russia whitewashed the African Champion South Africa and underlining their ambition to win the tough group A. Russia’s No.1 Yulia Putinseva and Viktoriya Kan only dropped 2 games respectively in their singles matches. The other seeded team of the group, 7th seed France, had to battle hard to win the opening tie against Australia, as both singles went to three sets. But the French girls Leolia Jeanjean and Lou Brouleau prevailed in the third set. Russia will have a tougher test against Australia tomorrow, while France will take on South Africa.
Group B: CAN-CHN: 1-2 BRA-CZE: 0-3
Carol Zhao (CAN) surprised third seed China’s no.2 player Jia-Lu Huang in the opening singles of the tie between Canada and third seed China by winning the match in straight sets. When Canada’s No.1 Francoise Abanda took the first set of her match against Yi-Hong Li (CHN) 63, it looked as if a major upset was about to take place on court 8. But then the young Abanda lost the momentum and Li fought back to win the next two sets 36 06. China then won the decisive doubles and kept the seeding order in the group intact. The girls’ of Czech Republic delighted the home crowd in the early hours of the afternoon by dominating the team of Brazil.
Group C: CHI-UKR: 0-3 NED-JPN: 1-1
The two ties in the group C could not have been more contrasting. While 4th seed Ukraine made short work of the Chilean team with only dropping 12 games in 3 matches, the tie between the Netherlands and 6th seed Japan turned out to be the longest match of the day. In the first singles, Elke Tiel (NED) turned around the match after losing the opening set 60 to Mami Adachi (JNP), clinching the first point for the Dutch team with 63 and 75 in the 2nd and 3rd set. In the match of the two top players, Miho Kowase (JPN) drew Japan level by defeating Indy De Vroome (NED) twice in the tiebreak. In the decisive doubles, Tiel and De Vroome clinched the first set in the tiebreak and then came back from 24 down in the second set to create the upset of the day in the girls part of the draw by winning the third set 64.
Group D: BUL-USA: 1-2 KOR-ARG: 0-3
The defending champions USA had to dig deep today to win their opening rubber against Bulgaria. Victoria Duval (USA) won in three sets against Cveta Dimitrova (BUL), before USA No.1 Sachia Vickery conceded a surprising defeat to Viktoriya Tomova (BUL). Victoria Duval and Brooke Austin ( both USA) then kept their calm and defeated the Bulgarian pair Dimitrova and Tomova. Eighth seed Argentina recorded a 3-0 win over Korea without dropping a set.
