Stephens sets up Robson test
American Sloane Stephens will face top seed Laura Robson in the quarterfinals of the Grade A Italian Open. Unseeded Stephens had a comfortable 64 61 victory over South African fifteenth seed Channel Simmonds but could face a tougher test from the world No.1. However, Robson has not had things her own way so far, and in round three was taken to a deciding set for the second time in three matches, eventually coming through 63 16 64 against fourteenth seeded Russian Yana Buchina.

The winner of the Stephens vs Robson encounter will face the either Christina McHale (USA) or Camila Silva (CHI). Easter Bowl champion McHale was also runner up at the Orange Bowl last year, where she came through a three set marathon in the semifinal against Stevens. Yesterday the American was tested against fourth seed Slivia Njiric (CRO) but dominated in the decider to win 63 46 61. Silva reached the last eight with a 76(4) 64 win over French wild card Carolina Pillot.

In the bottom half of the draw, the two remaining seeded players were both eliminated in round three, leaving the route to the final wide open. Third seed Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) lost two close sets to Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic, 75 76(5), while tenth seed Jana Cepelova (SVK) went down 75 63 to Anna Orlik from Belarus. Krunic now faces American Mallory Burdette for a place in the semifinals, while Orlik will do battle against Russian Ksenia Kirillova.

The one remaining seed in the boys’ draw, Argentine Andrea Collarini, cruised past thirteenth seeded Egyptian Karim Maamoun 61 64 and remains favourite to claim his fourth title of the year. Fourth seed Collarini won three titles on clay in South America at the start of the year and looks to have brought his good form to Europe. In the quarterfinal he faces Japan’s Hiriyasu Ehara, after the world No.37 dispatched ninth seed Yannick Reuter (BEL) 64 75. Ehara is looking to reach his first semifinal since September last year. The other match in the top half of the draw sees home favourite Federico Gaio (ITA) face Henri Laaksonen (FIN). Gaio beat Russian Mikhail Biryukov 64 62, while Laaksonen experienced varying form in his 62 06 64 victory over Jozef Kovalik (SVK).

In the bottom half, Argentine Facundo Arguello came from behind to defeat Yasutaka Uchiyama (JPN) 36 63 62 and now faces Stanislas Poplavskyy after the Ukrainian scraped past Nikala Scholtz (RSA) in the pick of the round three matches, 46 62 76(4). The winner will play either Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA) or Guilherme Clezar (BRA) after both picked up straight sets wins in round three. Herbert won 75 63 against Renzo Olivo (ARG) and Clezar beat Matteo Civarolo (ITA) 63 63.
