| Babos Bows Out on Day Three of Trofeo Bonfiglio |
As play finished at the end of day three at the 50th Trofeo Bonfiglio, only three seeds remain in the boys draw, as seventh seed Gianni Mina fell to Italian Federico Gaio. Mina had been the form player coming into the tournament, having won Grade 1 and 2 titles on clay in the preceding weeks. Despite a battling performance, Mina was unable to avoid a 75 67(1) 63 defeat by the Italian.
Giao’s compatriot Matteo Civarolo (ITA) joins him in the quartfinals. Civarolo’s progress was settled by an injury to his second round opponent, and compatriot, Giacomo Miccini. Miccini had delighted the home crowds on day two as he defeated second seed Shuichi Sekiguchi (JPN). However, despite leading in the second set, Miccini was forced to retire and hand victory to his fellow Italian, leaving Civarolo and Gaio to court the Italian crowds support in the quarterfinals.
A rare success for the seeds was recorded by fourth seed Andrea Collarini (ARG) who won 61 63 against Emanuele Molina (ITA). He is joined by thirteenth seed Karim-Mohamed Maamoun (EGY) who defeated Dovydas Sakinis (LTU) 63 63. Ninth seed Yannik Reuter (BEL) also recorded a victory. Leading 64 30 against Sebastian Lavie (NZL), the New Zealander was forced to retire due to injury.
Jozef Kovalik (SVK), conqueror of top seed Liang-Chi Huang (TPE) in the first round, continued his good form with a straight sets victory over New Zealander Ben Mclachlan 64 60. He will face Henri Laaksonen in the quarterfinal (FIN).
In a quartfinal line up that no-one would have imagined, the boys draw has been shorn of its top three seeds and twelve seeds in total. Not a single seed remains in the bottom half of the draw. As luck would have it, two of the remaining three seeds will play each other in the next round, as Collarini takes on Maamoun in the pick of the quarterfinal matches.
In the girls draw, Ksenia Kirillova (RUS) produced the shock of the day as she defeated second seed Timea Babos (HUN). Babos went down in straight sets, 75 62, to the Russian. The second upset of dayy three was the loss of seventh seed Heather Watson (GBR). Watson was beaten in a third set tie-break by Mallory Burdette (USA) 63 16 76(4). Qualifier Michaela Boev (BEL) did not allow the loss of a close first set tie-break to unsettle her as she staged a superb comeback to win 67(7) 64 75 over twelfth seed Lesley Kerkhove (NED), who became the third seed to depart on day three.
Fourteenth seed Yana Buchina (RUS) will face top seed Laura Robson in the third round, having defeated Tamara Curovic (SRB), 64 26 62. Italian Wild Card Carolina Pillot defeated fellow Italian Wild Card Francesca Mazzali, 64 64, to book her place against sixth seed Camila Silva (CHI).
In the boys doubles, second seeds Andrea Collarini & Agustin Velotti lead the way as they squeaked past the Slovakian pair of Filip Horansky & Jozef Kovalik, with a 36 76(2) 10-8 victory. Fourth seed Japanese pair of Ehara & Sekiguchi join the Argentines in the quarterfinal stage, as do eighth seeds Draganja & Marcan (CRO).
In the girls doubles, an incredible set of results saw all eight seeded pairs play in the second round, but only one seeded pair progress to the quarterfinals, as Veronica Cepede-Royg (PAR) & Camila Silva (CHI) beat Americans Brooke Bolender & Grace Min 62 64.
