Sekiguchi leads seeds exodus on day two in Milan
Day two at the 50th Trofeo Bonfiglio saw a string of major upsets in the boys’ event, with further seeds falling in the first round. Top of the casualty list was the boys’ second seed Shuichi Sekiguchi (JPN), who took a surprise early exit in the first round. Sekiguchi’s conqueror was Italian wild card Giacomo Miccini, who delighted home fans with a thrilling three set match against the world number five, eventually overcoming the number two seed 76 16 62.

Three of the remaining top ten boys’ seeds went out on day two, with Sekiguchi followed out by number six seed Agustin Velotti (ARG) and number five seed Cheng Peng Hsieh (TPE). Hsieh managed to hang on in the second set tie-break to level the match at one set all, before his opponent, Argentina’s Facundo Arguello, stormed his way to a 61 victory in the third and final set. The early departure of these top three seeds sees the draw wide open now that all seeds have been eliminated from the bottom half.

Argentina's Andrea Collarini narrowly avoided joining the list of seeded casualties, staging a comeback from one set down to run out a 26 60 61 win over Italy’s Emanuele Molina. Other seeds to go through included number nine seed Yannick Reuter (BEL) and number thirteen Karim Maamoun (EGY) who both enjoyed straight set victories over their respective opponents, James Marsalek (GBR) and Marco Bortolotti (ITA). Maamoun, Collarini and Maamoun join France’s Gianni Mina as the last remaining seeds in the boys’ event.

The girls’ event was a little more straight-forward with the majority of seeds easing their way into the next round. Both Laura Robson (GBR) and Camila Silva (CHI) enjoyed straight set victories having come through epic three setters in yesterday’s first round. Both Seventh seed Heather Watson (GBR) and Lesley Kerkhove (NED) dropped just three games as they eased their way to the second round, with Silvia Njiric (CRO), Cristina Mchale (USA) and Chanel Simmonds (USA) following suit with straight-set victories.

Alja Tomljanovic (CRO) and Yana Buchina (RUS) were both forced to fight back from a set down to make it through to the next round. Tomljanovic lost a tight opening set against Australia’s Isabella Holland before showing great determination to pull off a 46 63 64 win. Buchina faced a similar situation at one set down, before racing to a 36 61 62 victory over Italy’s Martina Parmigiani.

The girls’ event was not without it’s upsets, however, as fifth seed Elena Bogdan (ROU) crashed out in straight sets to Ana Orlik (BLR), with the Belarusian dropping just two games. The other seeds to fall were thirteenth seed Daria Gavrilova (RUS) and sixteenth seed Beatrice Capra (USA).
